“Sometimes when you win, you really lose. And sometimes when you lose, you really win. And sometimes when you win or lose, you actually tie. And sometimes when you tie, you actually win or lose. Winning and losing is all one big organic globule from which one extracts what one needs.”
That’s a pretty awesome quote from the pretty awesome early 90s movie White Men Can’t Jump.
I’d say if I HAD to pick a FAVorite basketball movie… it’d be Teen Wolf just because it’s so awesome.
But White Men Can’t Jump is easily the second best…. Hoosiers is pretty neat too… and those might be the only other basketball movies I’ve seen. Oh … Space Jam?
I don’t know.
I just love the idea of “winning” being more than just who has more points on the scoreboard when the time runs out; whatever the result of the competition, you have experienced something and can learn from it to enhance your life.
I’m trying to segue this into talking about The CrossFit Open and why signing up is a pretty cool thing to do.
Am I doing a good job?
Man… I do love this time of year. I love the anxiety, the obsessive Refresh-clicking on the leaderboard that everyone says they’re not going to do but then does anyway, the energy it creates in the gym and in the whole weirdo CrossFit community that we all hate to love to be a part of, the competitiveness that it brings out in many of us, the painfully slow talking Dave Castro announcements, the Dave Castro bashing, the whining, the high fives, the, “Welp… I’m never doing THAT again,” and then doing it again anyway ….
It really is what CrossFit is “all about.” I think many would say that the ACTUAL CrossFit Games is the best representation of CrossFit… but no way…. all of that is an advertisement for The Open… to get all of us in our small little clubs to gather in all our warehouses and get fired up and try to do more things than other people do those things in arbitrary amounts of time.
That was last year during The Open…. and THAT… was / is my favorite moment of my 9-year life as a CrossFitter… as a “competitor,” as a member of the CF community, as a member and owner of our small CF community… it was seriously so great. I didn’t get anything for it, I didn’t make Regionals, I didn’t “win”… but holy cow… it let me look back on all the training I’ve done… and how just ever so pleased I was to get that deep into that workout … and the energy in the room… and the community we created and the support we have for each other during this chaotic 5 week period. It was just so damn fantastic.
I wrote a lot last year about “why” you “should” sign up for The Open. I’m not going to do that this year…. mostly because most of the people reading this were here last year and I think are signing up anyway… and if you weren’t here last year and don’t know “why” you “should” … you can just read my thoughts from last year. I don’t like being Johnny Salesman that much. But when it comes down to it… we are all CrossFitters… and CrossFitters do The Open… they just do.
We are ALSO having a neat little in-house intra-competition competition …
…copying and pasting from Facebooooooooook NOW…
Attention all Down East athletes!!
The open is right around the corner and we’re going to be adding some additional fun to it this year. All YOU have to do is sign up for the open! After that, we will draw, at random, 8 teams and will be doing a little “In-house competition” amongst those 8 teams!
Here’s how it is going to work…..
We all know how competitive of a crew we have around here, so we will be splitting up these (John, Erika, Megan, Tara, Morgan, Eric, Byron, and Mike) athletes and be assigning everyone to one of their teams. This doesn’t mean you have to get together and do the opens at the same time at all!! Still do the open at the time you would normally do it (class time or Friday Night Lights) and then you’re only job is to cheer your team on for the next 5 weeks!😊 Teams will have additional opportunities to earn bonus points during the week for completing fun challenges and posting to social media.
🏆🥇The winning team will win a one of a kind super awesome prize (that we haven’t decided on yet). So, definitely sign up everyone (we want all levels of fitness amongst these teams)
Anddddddd, let’s have some fun at Down East these next 5 weeks!!!
Friday Logistics during the Opens:
We will be running Open WODs during Friday class times. Last “class” of the evening will be at 4 pm. Friday Night Lights will start at 5:30 pm, with heats throughout the remainder of the evening.
***We STRONGLY recommend you sign up for the open by this Tuesday the 21st so we can get teams “drafted” and team pics taken prior to the start of the Opens.***
Good luck to all our athletes!
If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so here!
This year is just going to be the best Open ever.
I just know it!
I’m not going to say too much about BÜRGERMETAL right now… other than it was awesome and BÜRGERMETAL II is going to be even awesomer…. we might even have miniature motorcycles to ride around, more snakes & dragons, but maybe not as much fire and explosions….definitely more weightlifting speed ladder races. And look…. I’m also not going to say smashing TVs and water coolers with a sledgehammer was a “bad” idea (I DID even buy us safety goggles)… but I am going to say maybe next time we will smash watermelons and stuff that’s less likely to make dudes bleed when it hits them in the face. And I made that “logo” / whatever Saturday while I was in the bathtub and wanted to share. I think it’d look preeeeetty fresh on a cotton T, y’know?
